Celebrating Yorkshire Day
When we think about Yorkshire Day 2019, it seems a world away from today.
Now, it feels more prudent than ever to celebrate our community. During times of adversity, Yorkshire comes together to support. Whether it’s businesses helping other businesses, family helping out or just being a voice at the end of the phone, we applaud the strength of our Yorkshire community. To celebrate, we asked some Yorkshire businesses a few questions about their roots and how they will be celebrating.
We asked Richard Page, CEO of Inspired Pet Nutrition (one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of premium pet food) based in Thirsk what the best bit about running a business in Yorkshire was. Richard says, “It’s the compelling combination of having a beautiful environment to work in, shared with colleagues who manage to combine humour and self-depreciation with true grit and determination.”
We followed up with the most important question: how will Richard be celebrating Yorkshire Day?
“Enjoying the countryside walking the dogs; hopefully completed with a pint of Theakston’s Best or a smooth Masons G&T.”
Sounds glorious.
Sarah from our friends at Puckett’s Pickles moved to the area before starting her business after falling in love with the county. Based in York, Puckett’s Pickles produces chutneys, jams and pickles sourced locally with deliciously unique flavours from herbs and spices.
“I relocated with work. It was a bit of a leap as I had no connections up here. I love doing challenges and moving up here was. I have never looked back; I absolutely love it here. With 3 national parks, a plethora of Michelin restaurants, you can go sailing and skiing in the same county.”
What does Yorkshire mean to Sarah?
“It’s funny, when I worked in London and was first approached about moving to Yorkshire I had that awful preconceived idea of what Yorkshire would be like. To me, 11 years later it is one of the UK’s best kept secrets. Yorkshire is just the most beautiful county; you can do something completely different 365 days of the year. Its inspiring and exhilarating, its friendly and welcoming, probably best summed up by the Great Yorkshire Show which should be starting tomorrow.”
And their plans for Yorkshire Day sound fabulous -
“I am having a BBQ for the Puckett’s Team to say thank you for all their hard work over the last few months.”
And finally, our friends at Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil what Yorkshire means to them.
Co-founder Jennie says, “Yorkshire is so varied, we are based on the Wolds so we are used to a rolling hill landscape but after a friend visited today from the ‘flats’ you realise there is so much difference in such a short distance. For us personally I think it is countryside, coastline, market towns and cities. Some amazing small indie businesses and people that care with a passion about what they do. Oh, and some fabulous food and drink!”
And how will they celebrate?
“Probably with a Masons gin of course (Peppered Pear for me, Tea Edition for Adam) and a good old family meal with the kids, hopefully al fresco in the sunshine.”
